More Hope Solo "Retrospective"
Dealing with leagues folding (article from 2010):
“Solo recalled the phone call she received after her rookie year in the WUSA. The only professional women’s soccer league in the United States would be folding after three years and nearly $100 million in losses. ‘It crushed my world,’ she said.
Solo went on to compete for Kopparbergs/Goteborg FC in the Swedish Premier Division before the WPS formed in 2009. Would she return to Europe where the game was thriving or to the United States where the sport constantly faced an uncertain future? ‘I wanted to go back to Europe for selfish reasons,’ she said. ‘I believed in the league there.’
After weighing her options, Solo signed with St. Louis Athletica, where she became one of the more vocal proponents of the league. Solo could be heard on up to three radio talk shows every morning and led All-Star voting as a fan favorite.
Faced with a second opportunity to leave [when Athletica folded], Solo simply assumed the same position she had in 2009. ‘I stayed in America to help promote the sport,’ she said. ‘I stayed for the future of the sport in America, not for the present. Regardless of what’s happening, I need to pave the road for the kids to come.’”
You can add moving from WPS (RIP) to Seattle Sounders Women and w-league to the list too.
