Hope is doing Dancing With the Stars. Like I said before I am not that worried about her shoulder. If you have seen people go through physical therapy for what she’s got they are already wrenching her arm like crazy and will keep doing it with the hopes of getting more of her old reach back. You don’t baby a shoulder like that. Getting motion back requires a lot of work and pain. This will probably hurt but no worse than what she ought to be doing anyway. Resting from 150lbs slamming it to the ground is different than gutting through range of motion pain issues like you get with dancing. Now her ankles…that’s what I’m worried about. I will be so glad when it is over. Meanwhile…the fashion fan in me is a little excited about what will happen. I’ll be too nervous/embarrassed to watch the show but I will look at caps/gifs.
I really do think Hope is doing this to get more attention to the sport. She is the only player that has ever had this option. 20 million viewers…if even a fraction of them tune into the Olympics to see her and then a fraction of them fall in love with the other players and the game itself and start following WPS…it really would be worth it. When you are this desperate to keep your sport going (and trust me, they are desperate) you don’t have the luxury of biding your time until something more palatable comes along. A certain magicJack commercial come to mind. magicJack in general actually. If that isn’t a sign of desperation I don’t know what is. Sometimes you do what you have to do. Even dance when it will hurts to dance. It isn’t big on dignity, but Hope isn’t one to bother too much with people’s opinions about her. As for the DWTS side of it… I don’t think THEY know what they have gotten themselves into.
After seeing a ridiculous amount of her appearances and interviews all the way back to 2007 when I got back into soccer again I know for a fact she won’t be a pushover. If she has a chance to talk soccer she will. And it will be hard not for it to come up because any story from her past, any fleshing out they try to do, is 100% soccer for her. Besides, she is athletic as hell. Her shoulders are like a pro soccer billboard.
If that isn’t a “come hither” look from Carli Lloyd, I don’t know what is.
On the one hand this reminds me of the sexual tension episode from Community where they managed to pair everyone off through a series of flashbacks to “important moments”. On the other hand…Carli and Hope, making it seem like no one else was on the field for a second. I really do love their ongoing B story going back to 2007. BFF OTP. :)
No sketchy male interviewer this time either. She was doing her Bank of America thing so lots of “teamwork” talk but I liked what she said about the role model topic and the state of the WPS. See, she can be perfectly cooperative when things stay on topic and even more open about stuff than you’d expect.
Brilliant article, with info on the e-mails Borislow sent to the team, etc. Some standout quotes:
“The day after a 3-0 loss to the Western New York Flash in May, the players received an e-mail saying: “You have no idea how you are going to get better, but I can tell you there’s only a couple ways. Play with the very best and act like them on and off the field. If you don’t do this, you are toast and will be playing in a rec league within years, drinking beer and farting after the game at a local bar and telling people how good you used to be at age 26.””
“Briana Scurry was fired as general manager after making comments during ESPN’s World Cup coverage about Solo that Borislow deemed overly critical. No replacement was named. The team doesn’t have a ticketing, marketing or communications staff.”
They started the season with three wins and then he up and fired the coach. After that he continually ripped the players on not being professional, being lazy, losers etc etc. I seriously doubt they were any of those things (they could make more money off their college educations than soccer sadly…aka, if they are playing they really want to be playing), but the guy fired the flippin’ coach! If he really felt that way maybe don’t fire the coach and treat them like cattle. Just a thought. Mark Cuban, maverick owner, he is not. He thinks he is playing the plucky owner, but he is so far the other way its sad.
The current players can’t really say much obviously but if this is the stuff leaking out along the edges when the lid gets knocked off it will be likely worse. Meh. Hopefully this World Cup buzz has shaken loose some new owners for next season so the bottom of the barrel no longer has to be scraped. Rich people of Chicago, Texas, California — please buy a team.
This one still pisses me off. Both the coach making that crazy choice in the first place (WTF?) and then the team shunning Hope. Neither the benching/team reaction were good soccer choices which to me are worse mistakes than Hope’s honest reaction.
So what Hope said something she shouldn’t have. Besides it being all true the team had to know what the inexcusable benching did to her, did to their team’s chances, what was going on with her personal life, and how important it was to have her on the team for them to be competitive going forward. If there was ever a bigger difference between the men’s and women’s team it is what happened here. Relying on warm fuzzies in the locker room and after hours just isn’t realistic at this level. They could have avoided so much of the media circus and bad feelings if they just absorbed it instead of going sorority against her.
I guess they couldn’t get rid of their coach so Hope was the one to get the full force of that loss, but the selective “family” togetherness that excluded Hope is my worst nightmare from my team experience. This is also why I love Carli Lloyd (even though she needs to keep those shots down, darn it) since I was lucky to have a Lloyd on my team too.
