Buehler hit a short back pass to Solo that was a bit high and hard and the U.S. ‘keeper, who was positioned near top of the box, collected the ball with a sprinting Iceland forward coming at her. All three players got into a scrum for the ball in the top of the penalty box with players falling over each other. Before it was over, Solo had her right arm stomped on, Buehler was called for tugging the Iceland attacker’s jersey (and shown a yellow card) and Beck called a penalty kick.
It took Solo a few minutes to shake off the effects of the stomping, but after a warning from Beck to get on her line, she took her position and stared down 63rd minute substitute Berglind Björg Thorvaldsdóttir. As the kick was taken, Solo took a step to her right and flew to the post to spectacularly knock the ball down. It looked for a moment like Thorvaldsdóttir would be first to the rebound, but the U.S. defenders converged to clear the ball away.
Solo’s two saves marked the first time in U.S. history that a goalkeeper has saved two penalty kicks in one match.
“10. Trip to Starbucks
“The Green Tea lattes are even better here in China! It’s about a 20-minute life-threatening taxi ride to the nearest Starbucks, but it’s worth it.” ….
2. Heated, yet insightful philosophical discussions with roommate Cat Whitehill
“The amazing thing is that I am always right and Cat is always wrong. I don’t know how one person could be right so many times in a row.”— Hope Solo’s Top-10 Pastimes in China — Where have these articles been all this time?! I swear I looked for stuff a few months ago and they weren’t up. Oh, and it looks like she won that final battle with Cat. Irrational, I know, but even reading her name makes me fume a bit. #sideeyesforever #greentealattesareactuallynasty
“How do you cope with those smelly gloves?
—- I’m fortunate not to have that problem any more because of my Nike sponsorship. They keep me smelling nice in new gloves whenever I need them! However, back in college, when I first met my boyfriend, I had quickly showered post-game and we went out. We were holding hands on walking around the streets and he reached up to scratch his eye and I guess smelled his own hand, and said, ‘what’s that smell?’ It was my left-over glove smell! It was so embarrassing. From then on, I scrub my hands and wrists after every training.”—Old Hope Solo QA (pre-2007). I feel like I read this back in the day because the glove story is familiar to me. Also, Adrian sighting. I have one of them too that goes way back. I am beginning to realize why everyone I know is so confused about us.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (October 27, 2011) – After careful consideration, the Board of Governors of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) voted on Tuesday to terminate the Boca Raton based magicJack franchise.
WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO, BORISLOW.
Hate to say it, but it was about time. The player abuse was killing me not to mention Borislow’s business model of buying the best talent…and then no advertising, tiny field, no film, no website, no merch… a maverick in all the wrong ways. No Mark Cuban. Wonder if this will change Hope’s vague comments about WPS. They all seemed frustrated and trying to keep a good face while in a bad situation.
“My ultimate goal is to win a World Cup, to win an Olympics, but also to establish myself as the top goalkeeper in the world," Solo says. "Bold, right? I’ve never had the courage to say it out loud until four or five months ago, but I’ve always wanted it. It used to feel silly saying it.”—Cute, pre-2007 disaster article about Hope and her unlikely rise to the top of the world. Sad to know what was going to happen shortly after this was written, but Hope came back even stronger so haters to the left and all that.
Len started the cheap shots when Maksim and Hope came out for the first dance. He accused Hope of having no connection to the dance and being too loose limbed. Hope fought back tears through her gorgeous smile, but it was clear that Len had hurt her…
Oh, Hope. Handed the “not invested” storyline they proceed to attack her in a way only an invested person can get hurt. Damn them! *shakes fist* All she wants is to get a result. Her meltdown is directly related to getting rammed up against that wall every week.
DWTS, you’re making a HUGE mistake. If Hope gets eliminated tonight, you’re gonna be losing a hell of a lot of viewers, I can tell you that right now. I will also vow to never watch this show EVER again…who’s with me?
I’ve never liked this show in the first place.
Since I’m not a supporter of hazing I think I am done either way. And when I don’t like something I talk. I talk a lot. So you have that to look forward to, DWTS. I used to dislike you on a passive, apathetic level. Those days are over.
Click HERE to listen (because for whatever reason I can’t seem to upload the audio, so you’ll just be redirected to the ESPNDallas website). She comes on around the 19min mark.
The best part of this interview is when Hope was asked who her favorite goalkeepers were, or something to that effect, and she talks a while about who she doesn’t like and why or such and such does things in a way she wouldn’t do or teach, how she doesn’t like certain acts some put on…and then she talks about herself! I couldn’t stop laughing. Oh, Hope. This is why we love you. Hope’s favorite goalkeeper is Hope.
edit: Someone said this worked for them. Yay! It was worth all that uploading time.
Some people were wanting the 2008 USA vs Brazil game. It is huge and zipped up into 7 parts that will need something like winRAR to reconstitute. I tested it and it comes back together fine. Whoever gets it first let me know if it works or not from your end. Get to it while it is up. No idea how long the files will stay active.
Note: You won’t be able to get individual zipped files to play on their own. All files must be completely ahemmed, in an area together, and you simply click the first zipped file and double click the video file inside of it, and it will compile all the information from the other zipped up files. No need to unzip things first. Go right for that first file.
Links behind the cut. edit: I’ve expanded my directions under the cut too.
Someone better have recorded Good Day LA because watching Hope have a blushing meltdown as they forced her to rewatch her cha-cha for the first time was probably the best thing ever in the history of ever. It would be a crime for that to have gone uncapped. Also Coffee Bean vs Dunkin’ Donuts? It’s like Mr and Mrs Bickerton.
“Solo was undoubtedly one of the breakout stars of what was a tremendous Women’s World Cup. A whopping 70 percent of those aware of her say they like her or like her a lot. Only 3 percent dislike her in any way. It will be interesting to see how her run on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ affects her awareness levels moving forward.”—Interesting NYTimes blog on popularity of athletes. They rank Hope only second to Beckham in US awareness levels of soccer players beating out even Donovan and Ronaldo. Abby Wambach was just trailing Ronaldo. Both Hope and Abby rank higher than their male counterparts in the “down to earth” impression. Way higher.
Hope was interviewed by Grant Wahl and SI.com recently. She says some awesome stuff about body image on DWTS, the fact she hasn’t watched a second of the World Cup yet, that she doesn’t really know where she stands with the WPS (she is Olympics focused) but she is glad it will likely come back next season, and how her shoulder is not any better yet as far as pain nor is it moving quite right, but she’s been off meds for three months and is saving that option for when it really matters: Olympic Gold. A very good interview all around.
Len Goodman is an a**. I mean really, Hope practices dancing probably every free second she has of which there are very few. She commits to everything she does. Sorry she has actual responsibilities outside of trying to dance on a reality tv show. Seriously dude, open your eyes and take a look at what she’s doing with her life.
This. Hope’s main crime is caring too much and being too committed in everything she does, even to this stupid show. Just look at her rehearsal videos. She should get points for caring too much. That is pretty much the only way she does things. Half-ass isn’t part of her lifestyle. I believe if Maks thought she wasn’t committed or putting time in as she should (he said he doesn’t cut short their rehearsals…sounds like they just go into the wee hours of the morning if they must even) he would have blown his top by now and he hasn’t. He was as affronted as she was by that accusation.
What really gets me is that this is Hope we are talking about. The Olympic medalist. Sports hero. Life story you could make a movie about. Giving up her rest time (as Abby and others are also doing) to promote her sport in the areas that have opened up for her to do so (marathon, ESPN, Nike, and yes, DWTS). Taking every one of those things seriously as that literally is the only way she knows how to do her life. An authentic, normal person surrounded by Hollywood. She isn’t perfect, but everyone else finds her easily marketable. DWTS gives her the uncommitted, lazy storyline? For fuck sake, Len. Buy a better writer.
